There's something to be said for boredom. A minimal number of toys, and time without sensory overload, promote imagination and self-direction. Cardboard boxes or objects found in nature can be great for inviting a deeper interaction. Children can also take an interest in everyday activities and chores.
Toys, along with media such as books, play a role in socialisation and perpetuating cultural norms and narratives. A violent or competitive toy could be seen to condone dominant behaviour.
